Why does affordable gorgeous lingerie not exist? I’m not even looking for anything ultra-fancy, just something different, something special and while we’re at it, comfortable. Sometimes I think it would be nice to own something La Perla, or Agent Provocateur, but then the prices always snap me right out of that day-dream. Let’s be honest, it’s just underwear – eventually it will get worn and ratty and end up in the trash.
Once in a while H&M will get some really nice pieces in, and no one can argue with those prices. But not every H&M carries lingerie. I have to drive to one that’s almost an hour away to get the good stuff. Don’t even get me started on Victoria’s Secret; that store is basically for teenagers now. You can find the same quality shopping at a Mandee’s for 1/8 of the price (cheap, cheap looking, poor color selection, and probably flammable..) A recent favourite of mine has been Top Shop. They also seem to always have a 3 for $20 panty promotion going on.
^this is probably one of my favourite bras I’ve ever had and it ran me $36. (Again, Top Shop..click the photo for direct link)
I have some sewing experience and I got to thinking, it really can’t be that hard to make some basic pieces. I picked up a pattern consisting of 4 different underwear styles, a triangle bra, and a slip. I’m also planning on dissecting some of my panties for the name of science here. My sister and I made a trip to the fabric warehouse on Sunday, so I’m ready to give this a shot.
Poking around online for some ideas and inspiration, I came across the fall 2011 collection from Princesse Tam-Tam (which isn’t really carried anywhere, except ASOS, and if you feel like paying a $25 shipping fee and only having a color selection of black and white, there’s Harrods.com.) I want all of these.
I’ll keep you posted on my experiment (wish me luck)
